Asher is a wingless fledgling who was orphaned at a young age and adopted by a family of Feather sprites. His mother was a Bat sprite and his father was a Feather sprite, making him a halfwing sprite who can draw from two different source elements for his Talent. He is very attached to his older adoptive sister Carinen, and does his best to look after her in her illness. He’s also close friends with Hasiel, despite the age gap with Hasiel being a greenwing (aka a teenager).

Carinen is Asher’s older adoptive sister. She too was adopted as a baby, and is also a halfwing with a Feather sprite mother and a Butterfly sprite father. She has been battling a long illness that no one has been able to solve, although it is suspected that the illness is connected to her Talent, which the Feathers aren’t able to offer her proper training for because she uses two different source elements as a halfwing. She and Hasiel have feelings for each other, although they aren’t officially courting yet. 

Siobhan is the same age as Asher, and is also a halfwing sprite, with a Bat sprite mother and a Bee sprite father. She lives in the Bat Colony, and because of her halfwing status has been forced to grow up in the Slum as a member of the Clanless Bats. She and her father have been helping rebel leader Ryn with his plans for rebellion against the Bat leadership. She ends up striking up a friendship with Asher when he helps rescue her from some Bat sprite Citizens (soldiers). 

Ryn is a member of the Clanless Bats who live in the Slum. His parents were involved in a resistance movement against the Bat leadership when he was still a child, but they were assassinated. Since then, Ryn has been planning his own rebellion against the Bat leaders and gathering allies and resources as part of his plan. He never shies away from bending the truth–or outright lying–when he feels it’s necessary. The ends justify the means, as far as he’s concerned.
